History of Pocket Watches

History of Pocket Watches

Did you know? As early as the 16th century, the pocket watch became a symbol of affluence. Even today, pocket watches continue to symbolize a certain class and prestige, and are highly sought after by distinguished gentlemen and ladies around the world. Learn more about the history of the pocket watch and how it has become an integral part of fashion over the decades.

First pocket watch

The first pocket watch was invented in 1510 by a German watchmaker named Peter Henlein. Peter took advantage of the advances in mainspring technology at the time and designed a miniature wristwatch that had never been seen before. This pocket watch was smaller than any other timepiece and compact enough to be worn. However, at the time it could not be carried in a pocket, but hung around the neck as a pendant on a necklace. In fact, the original pocket watch was so awkwardly shaped and quadrangular that it did not fit in a pocket. It wasn't until the 17th century, when they were redesigned, that pocket watches were officially called “pocket watches”.

Peak popularity

The term “pocket watch” was coined by King Charles II of England, who introduced waistcoats and began to carry pocket watches in his pockets. Soon, pocket watches were considered a status symbol in Europe and even North America. Almost every distinguished gentleman at the time owned or aspired to own a pocket watch. The popularity of pocket watches increased further in the 18th century, when pocket watches began to incorporate more elaborate features, such as intricate designs inlaid with diamonds and gemstones. This made pocket watches an expensive luxury item that only the elite could own.

Decline and revival

With the standardization of watch parts in the 19th century, pocket watches finally began to gain popularity. As you can imagine, they remained extremely popular for the next few decades. It wasn’t until wristwatches entered the market during the war that pocket watches began to gradually lose popularity. But this didn’t last long. In the 1950s and 1970s, as three-piece suits became popular again, pocket watches made a strong comeback.

Although smartphones have replaced most watches today, pocket watches are still seen as a symbol of status and their precious reputation has never faded.
